1st Annual
Brown County
Winter Hike

Saturday, January 12

Be part of a very special day at Brown County State Park. Join us for the First Annual Brown Count Winter Hike—and enjoy the fascinating wildlife, peace and solitude while hiking through Brown County State Park in its glorious wintertime splendor.

It will be a day to toss off those winter doldrums and embrace nature. A Day to exercise your body and your mind, with highly knowledgeable professional naturalists located throughout the hike to offer interpretive information and answer questions about the park.

The Hike:

The self-directed 3.5-mile hike begins at the Brown County State Park Nature Center, then winds through the woods, along Strahl Creek, and past Strahl Lake. Midway through the hike the local Boy Scouts of America will host a campfire and refreshments at the Strahl Lake Shelter.

The hike does include some rugged terrain. An easy-access hiking trail is located behind the Brown County State Park Office and will be available for those who prefer a more leisurely hike or are physically challenged.

The Brown County State Park boasts nine other trails for hikers who like to follow their own course and set their own pace. These range form easy to rugged.

There is no entry fee for the hike.

Arrival:

We suggest arriving at the Brown County State Park Nature Center between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to register and begin the Winter Hike. Naturalists will be located at various points on the trail until noon.

Suggested Attire:

When hiking in the winter, it is important to dress properly.

Synthetic or wool long underwear and socks should be your base layer. Wool and synthetic fibers (such as polypropylene) will keep moisture away from you skin thus keeping you warmer.

Your metabolism and the temperature will dictate your second layer. If you have a tendency to get cold, you might consider a fleece jacket and pants. For some, a fleece vest might suffice.

Waterproof and breathable pants, jacket, boots and gloves are recommended for your outermost layer. These will be your greatest defense against the elements.

After the Hike:

A special Hiker’s Buffet Luncheon—featuring hot, hearty, home-cooked food—will be available at the Abe Martin Lodge from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Relax in front of the fireplace and enjoy the sounds of Kara Barnard, an extraordinary folk musician. And watch as walking sticks are hand carved by Tommy Meyers.

Village of Nashville:

Before or after the hike, visit the many specialty shops, arts and crafts studios, galleries, and restaurants located in Nashville. Although the winter in Nashville is slower and more relaxed, many establishments are open and anxious for you to visit.
